Read Time:3 Minute, 48 Second

Hello dear reader , I am sure you must have heard of the word depression before, probably at one time or the other , you have been a victim of this. Knowing that what I’m about to write has a such background gives me confidence that my reader will surely sail through the story .

Depression can be termed as a state of mental instability due to anxiety , stress disorder or drug abuse . At this interesting times of a novel virus of corona , the media has again and again reported about increased depression level among members of the public , Making this matter a subject of public debate .

Depression , by large is the biggest monster eating on comrades in all Kenyan campuses , from TUK at the coast , across the hills , valleys and city West to Alupe college . So exactly , what leads to this sorry state and how can we just get through it . It is not a secret that a Kenyan comrade is faced with a lot of frustrations , just look at this ;

John , a first year student at Multimedia University goes clubbing , he drinks late , then he oversleep , not knowing that the next day is an exam , he wakes up late , tries to catch up with the classes , only to realize the End Semester Exam for a crucial unit X is almost done , he tries to plead his way with the lecturer but in no avail. The lecturer is so infuriated at John that he tells him he won’t give him any paper , after trying to get the intervention of the Dean ,which too doesn’t come through , John throws in the towel and goes sleeping at his room , reminiscing about the ordeals of the morning. While on his sleep , his girlfriend Juanita knocks . He wears a happy face and welcomes the love of his life probably for some conjugal consolation , but no , not this time round , Juanita tells John she wants some 2000 Bob to go do her hair since it is almost school closure and she doesn’t want to look shaggy .At this time ,John has nothing in his account , he literally doesn’t know what to eat for lunch. A man must try ,so they say , so he excuses himself out , and makes his way to the bathroom where he makes a call to his dad , and he tells his dad that he is admitted at the KNH and he needs some urgent 4000 , as a caring father , he sends this money immediately . Finally , John has something for his girlfriend , but with so much guilt at stake . He even takes her for a lunch date . That afternoon , John is so beaten up , he decides to ask for a puff of the holy weed , or do they call it blunt , he gets so high that he forgets everything . To add more fun , he goes to the local joint and drinks the remaining 1000 , and the following day ,John is found dead , yes , he hanged himself that morning at the rooftop.

I am sure that you enjoyed the analogy , but did u know ,John is me and you . As contemporary Kenyan University students , in one way or the other we relate with the John’s issues . And this are the same issues that bring depression to any other comrade at any campo . Look , it’s either frustrations at the classroom, pressure from partner , dissapointments in love , drug abuse , inadequate financial support , unmet expectations and all that .

But in as much as we face this issues , that lead to depression , we must not pay the ultimate price of depression ,which is either death or going nuts , like literally.

One major way of avoiding depression is getting a confidante , a trusted friend , mentor or just some person you trust who will never judge your situation. A talk through with him/ her will turn out great . The fact that the confidante will be empathetic Beith you will make you realize that you are not the only one going through the issue , depending on their capabilities , they might try to offer direct help , but that not wistanding , just a talk through had proved to be the best remedy for depression and we should embrace it . That does not mean our problems will come to an end , but we will know there is someone who cares and that our problems are not unique and walk along throughout a solution.

Therefore , dearest reader , never allow depression take a toll on you , speak up!

I hope for a better future for comrades ,with zero anxiety and mental issues , and this , is achievable!
