University students like every other citizen have political inclinations and different interests and feelings about every ruling regime. University politics have always received nation-wide attention for its activities that include activism which calls for countless demos by campus students. The political scene in the Kenyan universities is not different from the national politics. It’s more of a younger version of the country’s politics. The false allegations amongst politicians, propaganda, scandals, chaos during campaigns, bribing voters and election rigging are just but a few of the elements that reflect in both scenes. Universities have seemingly exploded with political and social action as good student leadership is more of a basic need. When a student leader is pocketed by the administration, they may fail to address real issues in fear of misplacing their loyalty and eventually losing a seat at the favors’ table.
There are claims that political involvement by students is nothing more than indoctrination, I disagree. There are definitely several advantages that comes with a student actively participating in choosing a student leader, a choice that affects their future in the academic environment .political involvement gets students to start thinking about the world outside their immediate spheres and how the actions of just a few people have a big impact on outcomes.it gives young comrades an opportunity to explore the political candidates and issues, to learn the difference between promises made and promises kept, and to make decisions based on their observations and study of people involved. After making their share of mistakes in making these decisions, they learn from them to make them better people in choosing who to lead any organization they are involved in.
University students are less likely to be indoctrinated, and more likely to have critical thinking skills than their parents and older generations as most of them do not engage with mainstream news that has been proven to follow an agenda that strengthens certain political ideas. Comrades will question things more willingly than people who have led their opinions cultivated through years of getting their information from the same sources. Being skeptical or questioning the system is an absolute requirement as only by doing so you can ensure that it continues to work well.
With students engaging in political matters now, there’ll be a population with deeper political awareness in future. Today they are students, but tomorrow they will be the parents and then then grandparents. Only by getting their political awareness raised early can we ensure that we have an educated(politically) population later. Politics is an area that everybody thinks they know best but only a very small percentage have the training to filter news and the political speeches and see the realities.
Students’ politics is essential to promote the democratic culture in students. It’s not only important in raising awareness about how democracy actually functions in a country but also gives students a platform-a means of getting into politics as a career thus every student should take part. Politics is the major essence of every civilization making it a very important endevour.one needs to be politically aware of the history, culture, traditions and socio-economic scenario of their country as only then can one be able to understand the political dynamics of that particular country. Political ideas of a student with these factors in mind would be an asset to the society.
